Disgust as beauty spot found covered in gas canisters, beer cans and cigarette packets after people flocked there as temperatures soared

A beauty spot was trashed by people out and about as temperatures soared.

Gas canisters, cigarette packets and beer cans were found strewn across the Stoney Bank lakes area of Egerton, near the Delph Reservoir, by a walker this morning (May 21).

Thursday was the hottest day of the year - and people across the country made the most of relaxed lockdown measures.

Bolton residents claim social distancing measures are being flouted.

Astley Bridge resident James Bunting, who discovered the mess, told the Manchester Evening News : "There is always some litter that I usually collect on my walk, but this was disgraceful."

He added in a Facebook post: "This is not acceptable.

"Enjoy the environment, party, dance, swim - but don’t leave it in this state."

Residents say a large group of people were seen gathered at the beauty spot drinking during the afternoon - and well into the evening.

Police were called to break the gathering up.

Another resident, Sean Hill, is running a clean-up operation to clear the litter.

He said: "It is somewhere we always went as kids, but you never left any litter. It's disgraceful.

"With it being hot yesterday, people have gone down to the spot and, well, you can see what has happened.

'It's sad really' (James Bunting)

"I don't want to take my dog up there to see that. It's sad really.

"A group of us are going down to the lakes at 1pm. Hopefully we will get a good response and people will turn up and help clear it."

Social media was flooded with people slamming those who left the mess.

One person said: "Just why would you do that?! It makes me so angry."

Another posted: "Not difficult to take your rubbish home with you and leave it as it should be for whoever goes next.

"Should be ashamed of themselves."

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment.
