Disgruntled Yankees fans disrupt game by throwing baseballs onto the field during play

Things aren’t going well for the New York Yankees right now, and some fans aren’t having it anymore. In the midst of the bottom of the eighth inning of Friday’s Yankees game against the Tampa Bay Rays — in which New York was losing 8-2 — the game was halted after a handful of fans tossed baseballs onto the field.

It’s not sure how the baseballs were acquired by the fans to be thrown onto the field, but the stoppage lasted close to two minutes as the debris was littered onto the field.

Here are both the Rays and Yankees broadcasts of the moment, though the cameras don’t linger long on the incident.

Here’s a look from inside Yankee Stadium from The Athletic reporter Lindsey Adler.

This Yankees season has not gone as planned for the team, as after the 8-2 loss on Friday, New York has 5-8 record and sits in third place in the AL East playing under .500 baseball with a three-game losing streak. New York has had some ugly losses this season, tallying a 7-3 loss to Toronto and a 10-5 loss to Tampa Bay within the last week.

While it’s clear fans are frustrated as to how the season has gone for the Yankees, throwing things on the field is a dangerous exercise, and an embarrassing one to boot. Of all the ways to showcase your disappointment and anger with the team, this is certainly not it.
