'Disgraceful' people have 'gone bonkers' with lockdown easing and are trashing parks

Campers who set fires in a community park before dumping their rubbish on the ground have been criticised.

Walkers found discarded crisp packets and plastic drinks bottles as well as a tent left near the site of the fire in Drinkwater Park, Prestwich, this morning.

The small campfire appeared to have been started during the night but was still smoking when it was spotted at around 10am on Tuesday morning.

Drinkwater Park has been a popular destination for walkers and cyclists, especially during the coronavirus lockdown.

Alan Quinn, Bury Council's cabinet member responsible for the environment, hit out at "irresponsible" people who leave rubbish in the town's parks.

"It's disgraceful the way people go to these places and social distancing and leave rubbish around, it really is the lowest of the low," he said.

"I think what's happened with the lockdown ending is that people have gone a bit bonkers. I live very near Heaton Park for example and the way people have left it recently is a disgrace.

"Flytipping is a criminal offence, I wish we had more resources to go around to stop it. "

The majority of the park is managed by the Forestry Commission and the rubbish is believed to have now been moved but Bury Council has been keen to remove any flytipping in the town.

Coun Jane Black, who represents the St Mary ward and Drinkwater Park, said: "As soon as someone contacts us about these sorts of things we'll try and action it.

"The weather's been really warm recently and lots of people have been out. We have had mixed messages on what we're allowed to do during the lockdown but we're trying to keep on top of any flytipping."
