'Disgraceful' brawl erupted outside Gay Village pub after woman said man touched her on the bottom

A 'disgraceful' brawl erupted outside a pub in the Gay Village after a woman complained she had been touched on the bottom by a man, a court heard.

Nicola Watmough, 29, had been at the New Union pub on Princess Street.

After she told her then boyfriend Callum Israel of her complaint, he decided to try and find the culprit.

Israel, 25, then became involved in an argument with two other men, Declan Lalley, 21, and Benjamin Platt, 27, at about 4am on Sunday, March 11 last year.

The row soon turned into a fight, Manchester Crown Court heard.

Watmough, a mother-of-two, emerged from the pub shortly after and became involved in the fracas.

She began 'grabbing and swinging punches' towards Declan Lalley, who had been fighting her boyfriend, then Watmough began fighting with Declan Lalley's mother, Donna Lalley.

Lalley, 40, dragged her by the hair, but Watmough took one of her high heels off and hit her on the head with it. Lalley then pulled her to the floor.

Watmough then went to another man, who she thought had hit Israel with a bottle, and kicked him.

A judge said it was 'unclear' who had hit Israel with the bottle, but he suffered a black eye and cut as a result.

Judge Richard Mansell QC told Watmough: "You accept that your behaviour, in fighting with first Declan Lalley and then Donna Lalley, in a public place like this in front of so many people, was disgraceful and you are rightly disgusted by your own behaviour."

Defending Watmough, Brendan O'Leary said Watmough is 'ashamed and embarrassed' by her actions.

Mr O'Leary said her behaviour was 'out of character'.

She has a previous conviction for battery, but Mr O'Leary said this was a different incident when an argument with a friend 'got out of hand'.

In this incident, Watmough got involved after seeing her boyfriend involved in a fight and made a 'poor and instinctive' decision, Mr O'Leary said.

Donna Lalley, of Redbrook Avenue, Monsall, was also due to be sentenced alongside Watmough, but she did not attend court. A warrant was issued for her arrest.

Watmough, of Burstead Street, Gorton, was sentenced to a 12 month community order and must complete 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

She admitted an offence of affray.

Declan Lalley, of Redbrook Avenue, Monsall; Callum Israel, of Hawthorn Street, Gorton; and Benjamin Platt, of Avon Road, Levenshulme, were all sentenced previously after admitting affray.

They all received 12 month community orders, and must each complete 80 hours of unpaid work.
