Disgraced Scots 'influencer' given warning over Instagram competition

A disgraced social media “influencer” has been given a warning by an advertising watchdog over a competition on Instagram.

Yvonne McCuaig has been warned by the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) that a giveaway on her popular online page didn’t follow their rules.

The 43-year-old, from Helensburgh, was exposed by the Sunday Mail earlier this month as the cold-calling queen behind a sales firm which had plagued people with more than half a million unwanted phone calls.

Her jointly owned company – Dial A Deal Scotland Ltd – has been fined £150,000 by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) after their methods were deemed unlawful.

But while she ran the call centre, McCuaig portrayed a life of luxury on Instagram in front of 87,000 followers.

The ASA investigation centred on McCuaig ‘s “Gucci competition” in which she appeared to be giving a winner a pink designer dress.

But the winner’s identity was never posted and neither were terms and conditions of entry – a breach of ASA guidelines on social media competitions.

Dial A Deal Scotland – which McCuaig jointly owns with Calum Kirkpatrick, 27, from Glasgow – has until Friday to pay its fine from
the ICO.

McCuaig did not respond to further requests for comment.
