ALBANY, N.Y. _ Former New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has refunded nearly $1 million in campaign donations, newly filed finance records show.
Schneiderman returned $972,117 in donations after he resigned May 7 after a report that he assaulted four women.
Schneiderman returned 154 donations since his resignation, campaign finance records show. He had returned $10,075 before he quit, the filings show.
Among those who got their money back was singer Bette Midler, who gave $5,000 to the attorney general earlier in the year, and songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, who gave him $10,000.
Schneiderman still has $7.4 million in his campaign account.
Schneiderman's campaign said in a statement that it is "honoring its commitments and paying bills in accordance with applicable law and precedent."
"Once the committee has honored all its commitments, the remaining funds will be donated to worthy and appropriate causes consistent with the law," the statement said.
Before the controversy that ended with his resignation, Schneiderman raised $390,689 as he prepared to run for a third term in November, including a combined $10,000 from director Richard Donner and his film producer wife, Lauren Shuler Donner, records show.
Laurie David, "Seinfeld" creator Larry David's ex-wife, gave Schneiderman $2,500, Barbra Streisand donated $1,000, "All in the Family" creator Norman Lear gave $5,000, and producer James Brooks gave $10,000.
Schneiderman is using his campaign fund to pay legal fees. On May 16, the campaign paid Clayman & Rosenberg $41,000 for legal services.
