Disgraced footballer Adam Johnson's firm 'liquidated owing more than £500,000 tax'

A company registered in disgraced footballer Adam Johnson’s name was liquidated owing more than £500,000, court documents show.

Adam Johnson Promotions Ltd was set up in 2007 to collect image rights payments and develop a property, with his dad David and mum Sonia each holding 50 of its 100 shares.

The papers said: “Mr Johnson was the sole director and Mrs Johnson was its secretary.”

HMRC presented a winding up petition in 2016 and a “final proof of debt” of £523,737.33 in 2017, which is disputed at The Business and Property Courts in Newcastle, the Mirror reports.

An exchange of “accountancy evidence” was agreed.

David Johnson declined to comment.

His son, 33, was freed in 2019 having served three years in jail for sexual activity with a girl of 15 and is believed to have returned to his home in Castle Eden, County Durham.

The former Sunderland and Manchester City winger was sentenced to six years for engaging in sexual activity with a besotted 15-year-old fan in 2016.

Johnson, who was capped 12 times and scored twice for England, was held at HMP Moorland near Doncaster after causing his victim "severe psychological harm".
