Discover why we’re taking style cues from Jennifer Lopez – dark brown wood is the defining kitchen look for fall 2025

Dark wood kitchen cabinets are having their moment this season. After years of pale, pared-back palettes, both fashion and interiors are leaning into deeper, cocooning tones – brown in particular is having a major moment. Specifically, very deep browns – velvety chocolate hues that feel grounding yet glamorous.

On the fall runways, brown shades have dominated, and the same richness is filtering into our homes. Dark woods, inky paints, and shadowy hues are no longer seen as somber but as sophisticated, layered, and comforting. They bring warmth and atmosphere at a time when we want our homes to feel like sanctuaries.

Jennifer Lopez’s own home captures the kitchen cabinet trend: dramatic yet inviting, it proves that darker palettes can be both elegant and livable.

The style secrets to dark wood kitchens

1. Balance dark cabinets with light surfaces: ‘Taking the plunge with dark colors needn’t plunge the whole kitchen into darkness,’ says Mioko Fujisaki, director of Kitchen Bee Design. ‘Kitchen cabinets are rarely the largest surface in the room. Floors, ceilings, walls, and countertops usually dominate, so keeping those lighter will create contrast and ensure the space still feels bright.’

2. Add reflection: If you are concerned about the depth of color, use reflective finishes such as metallics and mirrors to bounce light around and open up the space.

3. Test before you commit: ‘Committing to a bright or dark kitchen color scheme, similar to Jennifer Lopez’s kitchen, requires time, effort, and a whole lot of tester pots,’ says Fiona Duke, director of Fiona Duke Interiors. ‘You’re looking for a shade that makes your heart sing every time you’re in the kitchen. Once you’ve narrowed it down, paint a trial door or a large sample and live with it for a few days before making the final decision.’

Dark wood cabinetry has a richness that can either be lifted or deepened, depending on what you pair it with. The key is balance:

Light neutrals
Cream, soft beige, and pale taupe highlight the grain of wood and keep the space bright.

Warm undertones
Terracottas, muted ochres, and warm grays complement walnut and mahogany, creating cozy, autumnal harmony.

Cool contrasts
In well-lit spaces, smoky blues or sage greens provide freshness while letting cabinetry stand out.

Metallic accents
Brass, bronze, or brushed nickel on handles and lighting, enhance the richness of dark wood with a touch of polish.

Dark wood kitchens work especially well in open-plan or light-filled rooms where contrast has room to play. In smaller kitchens, keeping walls and counters pale ensures the cabinetry still delivers drama without closing in the space.
