Discount supermarket to give extra help to people on benefits

A supermarket with big savings for shoppers is extending its free membership to people receiving benefits.

Until now the Company Shop has only been open to NHS and social care staff, the emergency services and employees in food and drink manufacturing.

Those on means tested benefits can now apply for membership to shop at the Long Eaton store in Chapel Street, which sells stock from big name brands and supermarkets including Waitrose, Tesco, Nestle at heavily discounted prices.

All the food is in date, and perfectly good to eat, but might have otherwise gone to waste due to issues like wonky labelling, misspelling on packaging, or surplus ordering.

Membership has been extended due to the pandemic and rising unemployment to provide additional support for the local community. Membership lasts a lifetime and is completely free.

Company Shop Group has also temporarily extended membership to many of the UK’s key workers, including teachers and council staff.

Sally Wake, commercial director, said: "By extending free membership to people in receipt of welfare support, we will be able to help even more families to stretch their budgets further during these challenging times. We would like to thank our food manufacturing and retail partners for their support in making this happen ."

To help bolster the positive social impact generated as a result of Company Shop’s membership extension, the group is calling on local food businesses across the region with surplus stock to come forward, so that they can work together to provide a sustainable solution which will generate positive social, economic and environmental benefits.
