Discount retailer set to take charge of giant Ayrshire shop

A discount retailer looks set to take over one of Kilmarnock's biggest retail units.

It's understood that Poundstretcher will open in the former Wilkinsons building before the end of the month.

A series of adverts posted on a recruitment website states that Poundstretcher will open at the 36,759 sq ft site within the next few weeks.

The Fowlds Street unit has been a white elephant in the town after Wilko pulled out of the area three years ago.

Ayrshire Cancer Support had the premises until recently after moving in on June 2019.

In February last year, the prime commercial space was put up for auction with a guide price of £665,000.

Previously a Tesco store, the huge shop was previously sold in 2010 for £2.34 million, according to Future Property Auctions.

The auction firm said in 2020 that the premises has a rental potential of £200,000 per annum.

Kilmarnock already has one Poundstretcher store. The chain, which has 400 locations across the UK, sits next to discount rival Poundland at the High Glencairn Retail Park, where it has been based for many years.
