Discount retailer B&M to open new store in Newcastle

Discount chain B&M is to open a new store in Newcastle after taking over a recently closed Homebase store.

The retailer, which has more than 600 shops around the UK including 29 in the North East, is taking over the former Homebase site at Kingston Park, which closed recently as part of restructuring at the DIY chain.

The new shop will open on May 24, creating 60 jobs. It will have B&M’s usual range of products, which include toys, food and drink, pet goods, health and beauty and homeware. The Kingston Park store will also have a garden centre, DIY equipment and a furniture range.

A spokesperson from B&M said: “We’re feeling really positive about the creation of more jobs for local people and we hope customers are going to be delighted with their new store.

“We are all really excited to get the doors open and welcome our new customers through the door in weeks.”

B&M, which was founded in Blackpool in 1978, has grown massively over the last decade after being bought by an investment group.

The company was listed on the Stock Exchange in 2014 and has expanded into Europe with a majority stake in German discount retailer JA Woll, while last year it acquired the Heron Foods chain.
