'Disciplinary action taken' at Nottingham Hospitals over bullying reports

The boss at Nottingham’s hospitals has said disciplinary action has been taken as they look to recover from their damning inspection report.

The CQC probe, released in September, exposed a multitude of issues with Nottingham University Hospitals - most notably issues with a 'culture of bullying'

When previously quizzed on what the trust had done to improve since the inspection, deputy chief executive Keith Girling said listening sessions had been held for staff .

Two months on, acting chief executive Ruper Egginton, assured more has been done to uproot the problem.

“Disciplinary action has been taken where appropriate,” he told Nottinghamshire Live.

“We’ve had to supplement our teams who are looking at issues of bullying to make sure they’re properly investigated and concluded . And we need to invest in our staff because the most important thing is to not get to a position where people feel they have been bullied.

“We need to set the tone that says everyone who comes to work feels part of the team. They come here to be the person they are and work effectively in the organisation.”

Amongst the findings of bullying in the report were incidents of racial discrimination.

Mr Egginton said that since then, a review has been carried out into its BAME strategy, which has been “largely positive”.

He also added that “fruitful” meetings had been held over its leadership style, after it attracted criticism from inspectors.

“We’ve been making sure we’ve been out and about in the organisation, listening to the teams,” he said.

“[The report's] given people the opportunity to speak up and they have. We’ve opened our doors to people to a greater extent than we have before.

“We’re a very big organisation. If bullying and harassment didn’t occur in our organisation we’d be fooling ourselves. The important thing is to deal with them when they occur. It has no place in our organisation."
