Disbelief at death of 'talented doctor and lovely person' as tributes paid to young Glasgow woman

The death of a young doctor has left her family and friends devastated.

A body was found within hours of police launching an appeal to find Sophie Johnston when she was reported missing.

The 35-year-old was last seen alive around. 8.30am on Monday and her family informed of the sad discovery near Baldernock Crescent, Milngavie yesterday at 10.15am.

A talented medic, Sophie graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2009 and worked at the city's Royal Infirmary and Western General during her years as a junior doctor and went on to qualify as a GP, the Daily Record reports.

Her cousin Euan Wilkie took to social media last night thanking those who helped in the search to find her, he posted: "Thank you to everyone that shared our posts looking for Sophie. Unfortunately, she was found dead this morning. We were all very lucky to have her in our family."

Tributes were also paid to the "talented doctor and a lovely person".

Katie Gilbert wrote: "Very sorry to see this update on Sophie. I hadn't seen her since we were all at medical school, but her energy and sense of fun always made an impression. Terrible loss for her family, friends and colleagues. Thoughts with them all."

Claire M Ronald commented: "So so sorry, I am still in disbelief. I remember Sophie as a junior. RIP Sophie."

Karolina Agur added: "There are no words, rest in peace, beautiful Sophie."

Sophie also spent time working in Australia where she became became interested in the damaging affects of sun exposure on the skin and is understood to have worked at Clinetix Rejuvenation in Glasgow. More recently, she spent time in a hospital-based position specialising in dermatology.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10.15am on Tuesday, November 22, the body of a woman was found in an area near Baldernock Crescent, Milngavie.

"Although formal identification has still to take place, the family of 35-year-old Sophie Johnston has been informed. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a report will be forwarded to the Procurator Fiscal."
