'Disaster' - Brutal Match of the Day Leeds United verdict after Brighton draw

Micah Richards has described Junior Firpo's performance as a 'disaster' after struggling to cope with the threat of Tariq Lamptey in Leeds United's 0-0 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Seagulls started the brighter of the two sides and created a number of good opportunities to open the scoring during the first-half, with Neal Maupay missing the best from close-range.

Leeds were much-improved in the second period and almost won it in the latter stages, but Tyler Roberts' low drive was well saved by Robert Sanchez.

The result leaves Marcelo Bielsa's side in 17th, just three points above Burnley, while Brighton have moved up to eighth despite stretching their winless run to nine matches.

However, Firpo was someone who arguably didn't perform to his highest level and particularly struggled to deal with Lamptey during the opening 45 minutes.

The 25-year-old was subsequently taken off for Jamie Shackleton at half-time as Stuart Dallas shifted to left-back while Pascal Struijk dropped into midfield as Kalvin Phillips also made way.

It was another disappointing display from Firpo, who has failed to live up to expectations following his summer move from Barcelona despite making eight Premier League appearances.

And Richards claimed that he 'didn't know what day it was' after defending against the lively Lamptey, who was named as the Man of the Match for his performance.

Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, the former Manchester City defender said: "He (Lamptey) was different class, Gary (Lineker).

"When you're in that wing-back position, you've either got to get into areas with quality, or you've got to run at people. Firpo had an absolute disaster against him.

"When Lamptey gets in there, he has quality and Maupay should've scored. He always had that composure and Firpo didn't know what day it was, he didn't know what he was coming up against. Lamptey was by far the best player on the pitch."

Next up for Leeds is an important game against Crystal Palace on Tuesday, before they host Brentford in a quick-fire double header at Elland Road.

This is all ahead of a tricky festive fixture schedule, where the Whites face Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal all within a two-week period.
