In this show we discuss the deluge of creations that feel like a direct response to the #MeToo movement – dealing with sexual harassment, rape and consent. We ask the question: are we making progress in the way these subjects are treated on screen? We’ve seen film and TV striving to do better in exploring themes of assault. Last year there were movies like "Bombshell" and series like "The Morning Show" where women were calling out their aggressors and aggressors were being brought to account.
There are also projects that explore the nuances of sexual misconduct, like "The Assistant", "Never Rarely Sometimes Always" and "Promising Young Woman", as well as "BoJack Horseman", "I May Destroy You", "Normal People" and "A Teacher".
Writer and critic Iris Brey, who's written several books about the way women are represented on screen, including "The Female Gaze: A Screen Revolution" and Katherine Angel, author of the book "Tomorrow Sex Will Be Good Again", speak to Eve Jackson about some of the series which are deconstructing the consequences of sexual violence.
They talk about the subject of rape being a staple of TV entertainment in hit series like "Game of Thrones" and they discuss why consent is not just a yes or no matter.
