'Disappointed' vicar issues warning to UK government after childcare lockdown fines U-turn

A vicar who asked Health Secretary Matt Hancock about whether there would be a review of fines issued during lockdown for childcare-related travel has issued a warning to the government after their sudden U-turn on a review.

The question was posed after the government backed Dominic Cummings' 260-mile drive to his parents' house in Durham while he had coronavirus symptoms.

Reverend Martin Poole had asked the health secretary about fines during yesterday's daily briefing. Matt Hancock had said it was "perfectly reasonable to take away that question" and that the government could review the question with colleagues.

However, it has since been confirmed that the government will not be reviewing lockdown fines.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain today, Reverend Martin Poole said that he had received many positive messages after posing the query.

"I generally reflected the mood," he said. "We're sharing the frustration in these boundaries are flexible and now we know they are."

However, he said that he felt "disappointed" after hearing that there would be no review.

"It doesn't seem to be fair," he told hosts Charlotte Hawkins and Ben Shephard. "I'm a little disappointed that there has been some rowing back on that since the press briefing.

"Sadly that message reinforces the feeling that we're operating on different sets of values."

He added: "If the government is starting to say that we can interpret the law with our own judgement, that has enormous implications for the law in general.

"What I'm hearing is that the government isn't on the same page as the rest of them."
