Disabled woman claims she was banned from Toby Carvery for 'dancing inappropriately'

A disabled woman was left "crying all night" after she was banned from Toby Carvery for dancing inappropriately.

Samantha Nobbs was looking forward to celebrating her first New Year's Eve with her husband when the night took a turn for the worst.

The 27-year-old got out of her wheelchair to dance with her husband when she was labelled "disgusting" by a fellow customer and accused of faking her disability, reports DerbyshireLive.

Samantha has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome which means her joints dislocate easily  - however she said she is able to get out of the chair after consuming alcohol as it numbs the pain.

After being accused of lying about her disability, Samantha says she was told by a Toby Cavery manager at the branch in Derby there was nothing they could do.

She said: “When the woman came up to me I was mortified, it made me feel horrible. I felt like I had been punched in the face.

“I was embarrassed and upset and I’m not good with confrontation anyway but when it’s to do with your disability it makes you feel like you don’t want to leave the house."

Although she tried to enjoy the rest of her night she said she could not ignore the glares she received from other customers.

Samantha says she was then asked to leave by a manager for dancing inappropriately.

"I ended up crying all the way home," she added.

However Toby Carvery said she was asked to leave after becoming aggressive to a member of staff.

A spokesman told Derbyshire Live: "We want all our guests to feel comfortable and welcome each time they visit the restaurant, and we do not tolerate any sort of aggressive or inappropriate behaviour made towards guests or staff.

“We also have the responsibility to operate safely and within the law when serving alcohol, and retain the right to refuse service to anyone who we believe to be intoxicated.

“Following an incident where a guest was deemed to be repeatedly dancing inappropriately by staff and other guests in the presence of children, we took the decision to no longer serve alcohol to that guest.

“The guest’s reaction to this decision was deemed to be aggressive by the manager who then asked them to leave the restaurant.

“After leaving the restaurant, the guest caused considerable damage to the building, for which reason they have since been barred from visiting indefinitely.

“We take all accusations of discrimination very seriously and we would never condone this sort of behaviour. We’re sorry if the guest feels we acted in such a way.”

Samantha says she did not behave aggressively or cause any damage to the building.

She has also not been out since New Year's Eve and is paranoid about getting out of her wheelchair to dance.

She said: “We haven’t been out again, I used to love going out and having drinks and being able to get up and dance but now I feel like everyone’s looking at me.”
