Disability Equality Scotland’s Ian Buchanan said: “Disabled people are parked on lists because too often when houses are built, they still need to be retrofitted with expensive changes such as ramps and accessible toilets.”

The figures, showed 17,444 people were waiting for disabled-friendly housing last year, compared with 9714 in 2017.

The average wait was around 1000 days.

Tory MSP Michelle Ballantyne said: “The SNP has allowed a housing crisis to affect the country’s most vulnerable people.”

Housing minister Kevin Stewart said: “We have published guidance for local authorities which will support the delivery of more wheelchair-accessible housing.”

South Lanarkshire Council’s housing director Daniel Lowe said: “Any applicant who presents with a serious medical need for rehousing, including those with disabilities, are afforded the highest level of priority.”
