Disabled mum and her family 'forced to live off takeaways after kitchen nightmare'

A disabled woman claims she could not access her kitchen for two weeks and had to live off takeaways.

Victoria Walsh Prince suffers from complex regional pain syndrome and uses a wheelchair.

She lives with her partner and son and claims council errors have severely delayed work on her kitchen, Hull Live report.

The council said work on the kitchen was scheduled to take place on September 4 but Ms Prince declined the works taking place that day.

But Ms Walsh Prince, who lives in in Norton Grove, Gipsyville, said the council have failed to complete the work, which included re-fitting new cupboards and tiling the walls, and said she cannot access the kitchen to cook.

“I can’t go food shopping because there’s nowhere I can put anything," she said.

“I’ve been living off takeaways for two weeks which has been a nightmare.

“I can’t afford it and it’s making me get fat."

Ms Walsh Prince claimed a council surveyor initially came to take measurements at her property in early August and concluded new cupboards would be needed.

However, rather than ordering complete new units, she said the council only ordered new doors which were subsequently too small for the existing cupboards.

Ms Walsh Prince said workmen came to her house last Friday but new cupboards didn’t arrive until late afternoon.

Due to this they were unable to complete the work.

“I don’t blame the workmen, it’s not their fault,” she said.

She said her partner, Brendan Walsh, has since tidied up the mess but claims the kitchen has been left in a state of disrepair.

She said: “The tiling hasn’t been done, the cupboards haven’t been sealed, the plastering hasn’t been done and there are doors hanging off the units.”

A spokesperson for the council said: “We apologise for the delays and inconvenience caused to Ms Prince.

“This work was however scheduled to take place on September 4, but Ms Price declined the works on that day.

“I can confirm that the work in her kitchen has been rescheduled and will be completed on Thursday 19.”
