Disabled girl, 5, 'starving and in pain over delays to changing feeding tube'

A disabled girl has been left with skin burns, a mouldy tube and not getting food for five days due to delays replacing her peg feeding tube, her mum claims.

Furious mother Sarah Bukorovic, 31, from Berwick Hills said it was "heartbreaking" to watch her daughter, Layla, 5, suffer in pain and hunger after the shocking delays left her hospitalised.

And slamming Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary, she says this is the third time this has happened.

The hospital said it's sorry to hear Ms Bukorovic is unhappy, and said it would discuss the claims with the family.

"I'm angry, I'm angry that she's had to suffer for so long," she told Teesside Live.

"Why should kids have to go through this?

"She used to point to it and say 'mam it's sore'.

"When you see that it's heartbreaking."

The mother-of-three said Layla, who is disabled, has 22 different diagnosed conditions.

Mums with kids in care could be asked to take measures to stop more pregnancies

She contracted meningitis at just seven-weeks-old and is oxygen dependent.

Her disability leaves her unable to swallow and means she must get her food by a tube that goes straight into her bowel. Her mum claims this is supposed to be changed every 12 months.

But delays left little Layla in James Cook Hospital on an IV drip for five days, unable to be fed or take her medication as normal and in pain.

She finally had the procedure in Newcastle to fit a new peg last week, after what Sarah claims is a long drawn-out process of being passed from "pillar to post".

Ms Bukorovic added: "Once they took the old peg out it was moulding and black, she had big burn marks all over her belly."

The lack of eating has caused Layla to lose "a lot of weight".

"Hopefully she puts the weight back on because she's only tiny anyway," her mother said.

"Watching her suffer and missing out on school, having to send her home because her peg's been leaking.

"We just can't carry on like this, she's missing out on school, she's missing out on her education.

"I'm hoping we don't have the same issue next year, the last three years it's been a problem.

"Somebody needs to stand up and make a change."

A spokesperson for Newcastle RVI said: "We are very sorry to hear that Ms Bukorovic is unhappy with aspects of her daughter Layla’s care and we would urge her to get in touch with us directly so that we can understand and resolve the issues that she has raised."
