Disabled Edinburgh woman in tears after police make threat to fine her

A disabled woman, who lives in a sheltered housing complex in Edinburgh, was left in tears and feeling worried after police warned she may be fined for having too many visitors.

Officers told her son they had received an anonymous complaint over the number of visitors the vulnerable woman had.

Her son told the Daily Record : “Mum cannot leave the house for 12 weeks. My sister and I deliver shopping and stand in the garden, observing social distancing. A relative attends daily to walk the dog. Nobody goes in.

“The officers themselves seemed fine but I was shocked when they said they could be forced to issue a fine. Mum has been in tears all week since it happened. She is worried that nobody is allowed to come and help her now.”

Local MP Alex Cole-Hamilton said he was concerned to hear about instances where well-meaning officers were “going a bit far”. He said police should understand that people have complex care needs.

Police said officers attended “following concerns raised by members of the public”, but were satisfied with the response of the people at the address and took no further action.
