Disabled drivers faced with barrage of abuse from motorists stealing spaces

Disabled parking bays are regularly being used by drivers without blue badges in West Lothian – with 20 tickets handed out in the last fortnight alone.

And people with disabilities are facing a barrage of abuse from motorists when they confront culprits, a meeting heard.

Police confirmed the regular ticketing of drivers at recent meetings of the full council and a Livingston local area committee.

There was rare agreement from all parties when they backed a cobbled together motion calling for all partners – including the council and police – to look for ways to solve the situation.

And, potentially in a nod to the future, Labour and Conservative councillors accepted elements of an amendment from the SNP’s Willie Boyle that parking regulation may be the only way ahead to help resolve the issue.

Constable Ewan Hannay said police were aware of the problem and had
been ticketing offenders in the town, including outside the Civic Centre, this week.

The penalty is £30.

Around 20 tickets have been issued for parking in disabled bays without blue badges in the last fortnight

Constable Hannay told the local area committee: “We do carry out enforcement.

“We aren’t able to do a dedicated enforcement strategy.

“What we are doing is an unpredictable enforcement so people won’t know when it is or where it is that they can be caught, so they are always going to be at risk.”
