Disability group calls on McDonald’s to alter plan for new Stirling restaurant

Concerns have been raised over accessibility at a proposed McDonald’s restaurant in Stirling.

Last month the Observer told how fresh plans have been submitted to build a third McDonald’s franchise in the city.

The fast food giant wants to open a new restaurant and drive-thru at Springkerse – close to St Modan’s High School and The PEAK – creating 65 new full- and part-time jobs.

Plans have been submitted for a two-storey, 180-seat restaurant. The new application is for a site next to Morrison’s supermarket.

However, disability campaigners say the plans need to be re-thought and raised concerns that the burger giant had not consulted them.

Robert Dick, chairman of the Stirling Area Access Panel, said in an objection to planning consultants, Planware Ltd, toilet facilities at the new restaurant would not be suitable for disabled customers. He explained that the unisex accessible WC should have an entrance door which is quickly accessible, and not through an outer door into a WC lobby.

He also pointed out that a unisex accessible toilet with corner WC layout was the minimum standard and that he would like to see the more accessible ‘peninsular’ design as it allows the wheelchair transfer from both sides onto the toilet.

He has hit out at plans to also include baby changing facilities, saying: “This facility should not be incorporated in a WC, as it could stop a disabled person from accessing the toilet. We strongly recommend with a new build like this, that there is a separate baby changing facility which contains a toilet.”

The campaigners are also in favour of at least one table within the ground floor dining area to be easily accessible for wheelchair users.

Mr Dick also said: “A progressive company like McDonald’s would benefit from Disability Equality Access training of staff, and in particular, Inclusive Communications.

“It’s good they have planned two large parking spaces which could be converted to accessible parking bays in the future. Parking needs must be reviewed annually.

“McDonald’s make many positive points on accessibility, specifically with the addition of a lift to the first floor. It’s excellent they recognises the Sign Design Guide for effective wayfinding, and employing both visual and audible fire alarms.

“We would suggest McDonald’s new and future branded building designs should also reflect the necessary functionality and use for a modern and inclusive society. We hope that Planware as the agent for the customer, act upon the points suggested.”

A McDonald’s spokesperson told the Observer: “Customers are at the heart of everything we do and we want to ensure everyone has a positive experience when visiting our restaurants. We are currently reviewing the comments from the Stirling Area Access Panel and will continue to work with Stirling Council to ensure the design meets the required standards.”
