Disability charity brings a multi-sensory storytelling experience to Dumfries

A multi-sensory production of The Wizard of Oz is taking place at Dumfries Baptist Church Centre on Thursday, featuring special guests from Paragon Music, ARC Castle Douglas and ARC Dumfries.

This accessible production has been created for, and stars, individuals with disabilities, additional support needs and PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities).

The drama group, supported by PAMIS (Promoting A More Inclusive Society) team member Lucy McGill, multi-sensory storytelling programme development officer, uses the senses to ensure all audiences have the chance to engage with and experience the story.

The cast have been working tirelessly to prepare for this live theatre production, with its multi-sensory wonders, live music, audience participation, and perhaps a bit of improvisation.

Courtney Scriven, trainee mentor for PAMIS and Wizard of Oz cast member has this to say about the production, “I am feeling happy and excited about the day of the show, and I’ve been enjoying the rehearsals. Everyone is working very hard and I am proud to play a part.”

PAMIS’ creative arts director Maureen Phillip added “Multi sensory storytelling and performance allows people with profound and multiple learning disabilities to enjoy an immersive multi- sensory experience allowing them to access the story through the senses”

There will be two performances on Thursday, December 22 at 10.30am and 1.30pm. The venue has a full changing places toilet facility for people who require a changing bench and hoist, and a quiet space will be provided should anyone require it. The performance will be taking place on the ground floor, with full wheelchair access. Tickets are available at https://PAMISWizardofOz.eventbrite.co.uk. £8 adult, £5 children, £24 family. Schools/Groups over 10 people contact lucy.mcgill@pamis.org.uk for price. Please also email Lucy for information on sensory triggers.
