Dirty needle found yards from school gates in Glasgow's east end

A member of the public has expressed their horror after spotting a dirty syringe lying on the ground just yards from the entrance to a school in the Gallowgate.

The person, who wishes to remain anonymous, came across the used needle on Friday morning around 10:45am next to a bus stop used by pupils at nearby St Mungo's Academy.

They took to Twitter to express their outrage, noting: "Another day and another example of what an absolute toilet Glasgow has become...needles discarded on the pavement outside a school."

Glasgow Live alerted Glasgow City Council about the discarded syringe, and we have been informed that the item has now been safely removed and disposed of appropriately.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “Thanks to Glasgow Live for highlighting this discarded needle. The item has now been safely removed and disposed of appropriately.

“Discarded needles in public places cause understandable concern and such incidents are always treated as a matter of urgency. The most effective way for people to deal with discarded needles in public places is to contact us directly and we will commit to have the item made safe within 24 hours.

“People can report discarded needles on our website.”

Responding to news of the find, councillor for Calton Jennifer Layden said: "I am sorry to hear about the distress this has caused to the member of the public. The item has been removed.

"The council takes this seriously and we ask that members of the public to contact the council for uplift of discarded needles immediately, so this can be removed."
