Dirty Dancing filmmakers 'turned down 149 songs' before finding Time of My Life

If you've ever seen the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, then you'll have heard Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley's hit song, (I've Had) The Time of My Life.

You know, the catchy tune that plays during the swoon-worthy final dance sequence, when Baby gets up on stage with Johnny in front of the whole resort and struts her stuff.

The song was a huge success, soaring to number one in the US after the film's release and going on to win various awards - including an Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe.

But it turns out, the track very nearly didn't make it into existence, let alone the movie.

According to the song's co-writer, Franke Previte, when he got the call to write the song, he initially brushed it off.

Speaking to The Guardian, he said: "I had a hundred bucks in my bank account. The label my band had been with had closed and I was trying to get another deal.

"I was selling cars out of my driveway, living on a prayer. Then I got a call from Jimmy Ienner, president of my old label.

"'I've got this movie I'd like you to write a song for,' he said. 'Jimmy,' I replied, 'I don't have time'."

Thankfully, Ienner eventually managed to convince Previte that working on the movie would change his life, so he roped in John DeNicola to help him pen the lyrics.

And the idea for the chorus came to him randomly as he drove to their recording session.

"I got in the car and put the cassette on. And as I'm paying the toll at exit 140 of the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey, I'm singing: 'I've had the time of my life'," he explained.

"What the hell was I saying? I didn't know - but I scribbled it down on an envelope. The song was really written by the man upstairs, because I had no idea what the movie was about."

Dirty Dancing's finale most iconic movie dance scene of all time, say Brits

Previte, who is also responsible for writing Eric Carmen's Hungry Eyes from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, went on to talk about meeting the late Patrick Swayze at the 1987 Academy Awards - where they took home the prize for best original song.

He claims while there, the actor told him that the filmmakers had turned down 149 songs before they finally heard The Time of My Life.

And the song drastically changed the way everyone thought of the movie.

He quotes Swayze as saying: "To tell you the truth, we all hated the movie. We filmed the final dance scene first but we didn't have a song then. So we were like 'Let's just get this piece of s*** over with'.

"But when we heard your song, it changed everything abut the movie - and how we reacted to our scenes. It just created this vibe."
