Dirty café on industrial estate given zero hygiene rating due to an 'uncontrolled mouse infestation'

A dirty café on an industrial estate in Oldham was given a zero hygiene rating due to an 'uncontrolled mouse infestation'.

Droppings were found in drawers full of utensils, behind a pie warmer and on work surfaces at Unit C on Westwood Industrial Estate.

The business, on Arkwright Street, voluntarily closed following the inspection in October last year.

Environmental health officers told owners the business required 'urgent improvement'.

The premises had an 'infestation', council bosses said (Oldham Council)

The café was only allowed to reopen after a deep clean took place and the infestation was brought under control, a court heard. It has since closed.

Former operators of the business, Protec Security Group Limited, of Higginshaw Lane, Royton pleaded guilty to two food safety and hygiene offences at Tameside Magistrates' Court on April 21.

The company was fined £1,400 for each offence. It was also ordered to pay costs of £1,050 and told to pay a victim surcharge of £140.

Helen Lockwood, deputy chief executive of Oldham Council, said: “As a council we are here to ensure premises that sell food to residents are clean and are operating within the law.

The café, which has since shut, was on Westwood Industrial Estate, Arkwright Street, Oldham (Manchester Evening News)

“In the last 16 months our officers have visited more than 1,200 food businesses and 93 per cent of those have a food hygiene rating of 3 or above, which is good news for buyers.”

“Sadly a small percentage of business owners are not keeping their premises clean and safe. We will continue to visit premises and take action against those who break the law.”

Protec Security Group Limited has been contacted for comment.
