Dirk Koetter believes Falcons QB Matt Schaub is ‘still a really capable player’

When Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was knocked out of Sunday’s game, backup Matt Schaub was forced to come in and played pretty well.

The 38-year-old completed all six of his passes for 100 yards and threw for Atlanta’s only touchdown of the day during the team’s 37-10 loss to the Rams.

Koetter said he believes Schaub is still a capable player when talking to team reporters Monday.

Most coaches are going to say something similar when they know their starter may be out. But truthfully, Schaub is one of the better backups in the league. For his career, he has thrown for over 24,000 yards, along with 134 touchdown passes and an 89.2 passer rating.

Matt Ryan’s status is still up in the air with what’s believed to be a sprained ankle. Koetter certainly wasn’t ruling the former MVP quarterback out just yet, though.

With the Falcons’ season pretty much over, don’t be surprised to see Schaub out there Sunday against the visiting Seattle Seahawks (5-2).
