Director of BBC Wales Rhodri Talfan Davies has been promoted to a new role UK-wide role with the public service broadcaster.

Mr Davies has been appointed BBC director of nations with responsibility for leading all work serving nations and local audiences across Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland.

He will report to director-general Tim Davie and join the new smaller executive committee. He will continue as director of BBC Wales alongside this new role.

The BBC’s other nations’ directors - Helen Thomas in England, Peter Johnston in Northern Ireland and Steve Carson in Scotland – will all report into him.

Mr Tim Davie said: “Rhodri has been Director of BBC Wales for nine years, is an outstanding leader and will bring considerable editorial and strategic experience to this new role.

“In his time at BBC Wales, Rhodri and his team have led a transformation in nations and network programming - including notable UK-wide successes like  Keeping Faith  and  Hinterland  - as well as expanding our portfolio of Welsh language services. In recent months, he has also successfully completed BBC Wales' move to its remarkable new home at Central Square.”

Dame Elan Closs Stephens, member for Wales on the BBC’s Board said: “Rhodri is an outstanding leader- accessible, accountable and supportive.  I am  delighted that the Director of BBC Wales is now the voice of all the nations and regions of the UK. This is especially important as the nations play a substantial role in the new DG Tim Davie's vision for the BBC.”

Mr Talfan Davies said:  “I’m thrilled to have been appointed to this new role. Our services the length and breadth of the UK are playing such a vital role in people’s lives right now – and I can’t wait to work with our talented teams in all four nations.”

He will formally take up his new role on January 4th.
