Director makes Liverpool transfer 'exchange' claim about loan star

Mainz 05 director Rouven Schroder has said the club are in talks with Liverpool over potentially re-signing Taiwo Awoniyi.

The 22-year-old Reds forward is currently on loan with the Bundesliga outfit and has featured 11 times during his stay in Germany.

Awoniyi scored his first goal for Jurgen Klopp's former side against FC Koln last month in a 2-2 draw.

The Nigerian striker has clearly impressed since being loaned to Mainz at the start of last season - and the club's director has claimed they are in 'an exchange with Liverpool'.

Schroder told Bild: “I am very, very positive about him.

“Taiwo never let himself down, always had his head up and the absolute will to improve was never negative. It is a symbol of how team sport works.

"We are in an exchange with Liverpool, that is an open position.

"We are now waiting for the last games. Then we'll see what the next steps are."

Mainz, who currently sit 15th in the table, will take on Augsburg on Sunday as they battle to avoid relegation from Germany's top flight.
