Kiyoshi Kurosawa, winner of the Silver Lion for best director at the 77th Venice International Film Festival for "Spy no Tsuma" (Wife of a Spy), showed the trophy in public for the first time Wednesday evening, at a Tokyo event commemorating the award.
Kurosawa was joined on stage by the stars of the film, Yu Aoi and Issey Takahashi. The director chose not to attend the Venice festival because of the novel coronavirus, and therefore did not receive the trophy at this year's award ceremony.
"The trophy arrived at my place a few days ago. I'm deeply moved that my name has been etched in the history of film," Kurosawa said with a smile.
Set on the eve of the Pacific War, "Spy no Tsuma" depicts a married couple who remain true to their love despite being suspected of espionage. The film will be released in domestic theaters on Oct. 16.
