Direct Provision centre refuses to comment after 'food served in bag' video appears online

A video appearing to show asylum seekers in Galway being served food in bags has surfaced online.

Footage, claiming to have been filmed inside Eglinton Hotel Direct Provision centre in Salthill, shows a canteen server placing food in plastic bags for asylum seekers.

The video was posted on social media by activist group Abolish Direct Provision and has been widely criticised on Twitter.

The caption read: "Video from asylum seekers of the dinner being served in plastic bags every day by the chef in Salthill DP centre in Galway.

"They have complained to the management."

A statement from Abolish Direct Provision said: "As a campaign we are very concerned about these complaints from asylum seekers in Salthill Direct Provision Centre concerning the quality of food and also the manner it is served daily at the centre.

"One family is there for over 6 years and said nothing changed with the white paper to end direct provision.

"We would appreciate if IPAS investigate this matter in a timely and professional manner."

When contacted by Galway Beo, the Eglinton Hotel Direct Provision refused to comment on the matter.

Galway Beo has also contacted IPAS.
