Direct flights between Edinburgh and Beijing set to return

The only direct flights between Scotland and China are set to resume in June, after being cancelled in 2019.

Hainan Airlines are bringing back twice-weekly flights between Edinburgh Airport and Beijing from June 26, until October 8. The service was pulled almost four years ago due to the Covid pandemic.

Local leaders have hailed the return as a 'strong indicator' of the Scottish appeal for Chinese tourists, according to the BBC.

Council Leader Cammy Day welcomed the news, stating it would 'help Edinburgh-based businesses'. He added: "“We were the first city in Scotland to launch a direct flight to China so it’s fantastic to see this key link with Beijing return in time for the summer.

“Beijing has a bustling population of over 21 million and is a gateway to the rest of China, which means this route will provide residents and students with a welcome direct connection to family and friends. Plus, it will help Edinburgh-based businesses with their outreach overseas while massively encouraging tourism to our city.

Airport chief executive Gordon Dewar described it as "fantastic news".

He said: "This important connectivity will provide a boost to Scotland's universities and tourism industry, open up a wealth of new business opportunities, and enable better access to other parts of the world."

Transport Minister Kevin Stewart also welcomed the announcement.

He said: "This direct connectivity is great news for people and businesses in both Scotland and China, building strong links for business and exports, as well as making it easier for visitors and students to come and experience Scotland."
