CHENNAI: The number of new Covid-19 cases in the state has been decreasing since August 12. The state reported 1,604 new infections on Monday, taking the state’s case tally to 26.02 lakh. Of the 25.48 lakh people who have recovered from the infection so far, 1,863 people were discharged on Monday.
There were 25 deaths on Monday and 18,887 people are undergoing treatment either in hospital or at home.
Of the new infections, 100 cases were in children aged below 12 years and 222 people were aged 60 years and above. While all districts reported cases below 200, only Coimbatore with 195, Chennai with 172 and Thanjavur with 104 reported cases more than 100.
As on August 22, Coimbatore has a test positivity rate of 1.8% while Chennai is 0.7% while Thanjavur is 3%. The three districts also reported four deaths each, the maximum on Monday.
Four districts — Perambalur and Ramanathapuram with three each, Theni and Virudhunagar with eight each — recorded cases less than 10. The eight western districts have 7,262 people under treatment, which is nearly 38% of the state’s total active cases.
It is followed by Chennai region, which along with its three neighbouring districts, has 4,293 people under treatment. Central region has 3,577 active cases, followed by the northern region with 2,395 and southern districts have1,355 cases.
After an increase in fresh cases on August 11 with 1,964, Tamil Nadu has been recording a steady decline from 1,942 cases on August 12 to 1,630 on August 22. Twenty six districts reported zero deaths on Monday.
