Dion Sanderson sends Sunderland fans emotional message after major injury blow

Dion Sanderson has sent a heart-felt message of support to Sunderland staff, players and fans after being ruled out for the rest of the season.

The defender had been a leading player in the Black Cats' push for promotion this season after joining on loan from Wolves.

However, head coach Lee Johnson confirmed today that the 21-year-old will be out for around six weeks with a back problem, meaning he will miss Sunderland's three remaining League One games and any play-off fixtures.

It's a major blow to Sunderland, who already have Jordan Willis, Arbenit Xhemajli, Tom Flanagan and Conor McLaughlin on the injured list, but Sanderson was quick to pass on his encouragement for the rest of the season.

Taking to social media after today's news, Sanderson tweeted: "With a heavy heart I have to say I am unable to play for the remainder of the season due to injury.

"I would like to thank the manager the players and the fantastic fans. I wish you all the best and will be supporting you all the way. Ha’way the lads."

Confirming Sanderson's injury blow today, Johnson said: "Dion will be out for six weeks. He's a good personality and a great kid first and foremost, but the bit that most impressed me was how he stepped up in the leadership and communications skills areas, which shows he has a bright future.

"It's a big blow, but I don't think about those types of things in that way.

"I look at it as a challenge; otherwise it's woe is me, and it's not about me – it's about the team and giving someone an opportunity or adjusting it."

Sunderland take on Blackpool tonight with Luke O'Nien likely to again partner Bailey Wright in the heart of the Black Cats' defence.
