Diogo Portela breaks down in emotional interview following World Darts Championship win

Brazilian darts player Diogo Portela broke down in tears after an emotional win over Steve Beaton tonight in the World Darts Championship.

Portela cruised to a straight sets victory over the experienced Englishman at Ally Pally tonight and broke down in tears immediately after the win.

And in an emotional interview, he opened up on his challenging year during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The game was played just before Irishman Keane Barry's clash with Jeff Smith.

Ahead of tonight, Barry said: "Just because I'm on the tour now, I'm not saying 'I'm a professional darts player and I'm happy now'. I want to keep progressing. In two years time I'm hoping to be in the top 64, keep my card and keep progressing.

"I'm not just going to stop because I've got to where I want to be for the minute. I want to keep pushing and pushing into the top 32, top 16 and top players in the world. That's where I want to be. "

Barry had a huge army of supporters roaring him on at the tournament last year, but only 1,000 spectators will be in attendance this time around and chanting is not permitted.

But the youngster will have the whole of Duleek watching his game on TV and cheering him on from home.

He said: "Everyone is stopping me in the village and wishing me the best of luck and there's the local companies that sponsor me.

"It's brilliant the support you get from such a small village. Everyone's behind you and it's good to have that.

"You know you have your support and last year a lot of people from Duleek travelled over and a lot of other people from Ireland travelled over.

"It's massive the support I'm getting and I appreciate every single bit of it."
