Diogo Jota transfer helped Liverpool improve in area where Man City have plummeted

Liverpool's defence might be coping well despite the absences of key men like Virgil van Dijk, but it is at the other end of the field that Jurgen Klopp has improved on last season.

That might not be a huge shock - Diogo Jota has come into the side and is flying - but the numbers certainly show an improvement.

After nine games of last season, Liverpool’s expected goals (xG) value was 18.46. Manchester City’s, meanwhile, was 29.54.

This season after nine matches, despite having played Chelsea, Arsenal, a much-improved Everton, Manchester City and Leicester, as well as the anomalous defeat to Aston Villa, Liverpool’s total xG has increased to 21.22.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have plummeted drastically to 12.41, though they have played a game fewer.

Put simply, that means Liverpool are creating a higher volume of chances in good positions, with those in the attack frequently able to convert them, with the Leicester game a prime example.

On the Analysing Anfield podcast, David Hughes said: "Liverpool had four big chances inside the six-yard box against Leicester - and when I say ‘big’, I mean 0.4 upwards in terms of xG value.

"Then there is another chance just outside the six-yard box that is over 0.5 xG. These numbers really tell a story. They are really high-quality chances in really good areas and anything inside the six-yard box normally has a good chance of being converted into a goal."

Josh Williams added: "That was Liverpool’s highest xG of the season so far in the Premier League.

"Last season in the Premier League, the Leicester game (away) was the third-highest xG Liverpool posted and the game at Anfield was the fifth-highest. Generally against Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester, Liverpool tend to do well."

Sustain the current rate of chance creation and conversion compared to last season and Liverpool will score more goals while not conceding any of the level of control they largely have over opponents.

Take Aston Villa out of the equation and Liverpool xG against them is bettered only by Chelsea, meaning the defence is not struggling as a result of a greater attacking emphasis.

Liverpool are statistically creating the most volume of chances in the Premier League so far this season with statistically the highest quality too.

With sharp-shooting forwards like the in-form Jota and top scorer Mohamed Salah, Liverpool will almost always find a goal.
