Diogo Jota ready for Liverpool 'anger' and makes Jurgen Klopp claim

New signing Diogo Jota is ready to embrace the "anger" he believes has helped make Liverpool the best team in the world.

Jota has put pen to paper on a five-year contract after arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee worth an initial £41million that could rise to £45m.

The 23-year-old forward, who will wear the number 20 jersey vacated by Adam Lallana this summer, has become the fourth most expensive signing in the history of the Premier League champions.

And the Portugal international has explained why there are no doubts he has made the right choice in becoming Jurgen Klopp's third new arrival of this transfer window.

"They are the best team in the world at the moment," said Jota. "It was impossible to say no.

"I've played two years in the Premier League now with Wolves and it's the right time for me to play in the Champions League again.

"Liverpool are a special team; the way they press, the intensity that they put into the game is just another level and that’s what I want to be part of – that anger to play the game and to score goals.

“I think that’s a great way to play the game and that’s the way I want to play as well."

Jota played four times against Liverpool during his time at Wolves, losing three Premier League games but claiming an assist in the 2-1 FA Cup third round win over the Reds at Molineux in January 2019.

And he added: “There was no doubt about Liverpool being the best team in the league last season by some distance.

“The intensity they put into the game... they were just unbelievable. They were all over the place.

"It felt like they were playing with more players than the other teams. Hopefully we can do the same again this year with me being a part of it.”

Jota began his career with Pacos Fereirra, based in his home town of Porto. He signed for Atletico Madrid in 2016 and was immediately loaned to Porto for a season, before a similar move to Wolves where he scored 17 goals in 44 Championship appearances to help them earn promotion.

He then made a permanent £12.8m transfer and, in 85 subsequent appearances, scored 26 goals and claimed 13 assists in all competitions.

Jota was given his senior international debut last November and scored his first goal for Portugal in their 4-1 win over Croatia earlier this month.

And the forward is convinced he can progress his career further under the tutelage of Klopp.

"Jurgen is a fantastic coach," he said. "I looked at him when I was a kid and he was already managing a team in a Champions League final.

"He is the right manager for me. This is a good move and the right step.

"As a player you always want to grow, and hopefully I can become a good option for Liverpool in the future."

Jota is expected to provide another alternative to Liverpool's main forwards Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, although the new boy wants to line up alongside the trio.

“They are world-class players,” added Jota, speaking to liverpoolfc.com. “I want to be one more piece to join that three. That’s what I will do. They are obviously more experienced than me, so the first stage is to connect with them, to learn with them.

“I think I am a team player. I play up front and my job is to find a way to score goals and to provide assists and that’s what they can expect from me.

"The fans can count on me because now I am one of them and I will give my best. This (Anfield) is the best stadium and the best environment by some distance. The situation with Covid means it won't be for now, but I'll be looking forward to it.

"I just wish we could have had the stadium full for my debut. It'll still be special, and we can have the fans with us later to help us to good things."
