Diogo Jota makes 'impossible' Liverpool admission and sets Champions League challenge

Diogo Jota has explained how Liverpool haven’t “done their jobs properly” as they prepare to face Manchester United.

The Reds are still on a quest to secure a top four finish, but have fallen four points behind with just five matches left to play.

Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw with Newcastle last time out, rueing several missed opportunities to increase their goal tally.

Jota, despite being disappointed with the dropped points, is still taking the positives.

“That's one specific thing,” Jota told Liverpoolfc.com , when asked about the missed chances. “Obviously everyone [would have] noticed the great first half that we did if we had converted more chances than we did.

“At the end, it was only 1-0 and at the end of the game that wasn't enough.

“Because of that, the punishment for the chances that we missed is even bigger. But we have to stick to the positives.

“Like you said, we created so now we just need to improve on that final bit, and with the quality that we have, I think we will.”

A four point gap between the Reds and the Champions League places has made reaching the top four a difficult task.

Jota says that Liverpool only have themselves to blame for not narrowing the gap, and admits that while the task may be difficult they will not give up.

“I've been mentioning that since we had 10 games left – I said if we did our job I thought we were going to get it,” said Jota.

“But now with five to go, we didn't do our job properly and it's not only about us now.

“But if we don't do our bit, it's impossible.

“So we need to do [that] and hope for the results to go our way.

“We know it's going to be hard but we need at least to be doing our job.”
