Diogo Jota injury timescale set out as Joel Matip Liverpool return confirmed

Liverpool have been handed a major injury boost with Joel Matip's return to full training ahead of the clash with Burnley.

Matip has been absent since suffering with an adductor issue on December 27 in the draw with West Bromwich Albion.

However, Jurgen Klopp confirmed the centre-back resumed training with the Reds squad on Tuesday.

The Premier League champions have been dealing with an injury crisis in the heart of defence with long-term absentees Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez sorely missed while Matip has been unable to prove his fitness.

Fabinho has filled in masterfully at centre-half and has been joined by fellow midfielder and captain Jordan Henderson in the last two top flight games while the young Rhys Williams and relatively inexperienced Nat Phillips have also partnered the Brazilian.

Klopp said: "First and foremost, Joel is in full training and now we have to make a decision. Yesterday, he trained completely normally."

The Liverpool manager also gave an update on star attacker Diogo Jota.

The Portugal international sustained a difficult knee injury against FC Midtjylland on December 9 but had struck nine goals in 17 appearances before that, following his transfer from Wolves in September.

"Diogo is still a few weeks away," Klopp added.

"I don't know exactly for how long but it won't be in the next one or two weeks. He needs time and the injury needs time.

"How much I miss a player is not important when he's not there I'm not allowed to miss him. I never think like that. He's not there and we have to deal with the situation. That's what we did.

"We will be happy, hopefully in the near future, when he's back again."
