Diogo Jota followed Jurgen Klopp's instructions to score Liverpool winner against West Ham

Jurgen Klopp wanted a "lively" cameo from Diogo Jota - and he got one as the substitute proved to Liverpool's match-winner against West Ham United.

Jota came off the bench to replace Roberto Firmino in the 70th minute of Saturday night's Premier League clash at Anfield.

The game was finely poised at 1-1 after Pablo Fornals' early opener had been cancelled out by a Mohamed Salah penalty shortly before half-time.

Jota certainly made a big impact and saw a goal disallowed by VAR before eventually putting Liverpool in front five minutes from time.

The summer signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers latched on to a pass from fellow substitute Xherdan Shaqiri and made no mistake with the finish as he secured a 2-1 win that took Klopp's men to the top of the Premier League table.

It was the Portugal forward's third goal in as many home outings since his arrival at the club - the first time a Liverpool player has achieved the feat since Luis Garcia in 2004.

"It means a lot, of course," Jota told Sky Sports.

"Always in a match, you are thinking what can I do different to unlock the result and, fortunately, I got two goals - just one counted - and in the end we got the victory.

"The most important thing was the win and we just want to keep winning games."

Asked what Klopp told him before entered the fray, Jota replied: "To be lively. Of course, with the game time the other team gets tired, so we needed to do movement, movement. Fortunately, in the end, I got the space, a great pass from Shaq, and scored."

On his disallowed effort, ruled out for a foul committed by Sadio Mane in the build-up, Jota said: "For me, it was a goal. I didn't see anything suspicious but it's football now and we need to wait.

"Unfortunately for us, that one didn't count but we won and that was most important."

And on having to be patient in his quest for a regular starting spot, Jota said: "I played two games in the starting 11 before this one, so this is a team. The manager chooses 11 and then we just need to do our job."
