Diogo Goncalves wants to bring 'joy' to new set of fans after Nottingham Forest snub

Winger Diogo Goncalves is hoping to bring “joy” to a new set of supporters, following the end of his Nottingham Forest loan spell.

The Benfica youngster spent last season at the City Ground, with the Reds understood to have had an option - reportedly worth 20m euros - to turn his move into a permanent one.

But Goncalves struggled to make much of an impression and it seems Martin O’Neill has snubbed any chance of him coming back to the club.

The 22-year-old has now joined Portuguese side Famalicao on loan for the upcoming campaign.

“I come with a lot of ambition for this project,” said Goncalves. “And I intend to do my utmost to help the club to build itself on the highest level of Portuguese football, as well as giving joy to these supporters who I have heard very well and who feel the club in a passionate way.”

The Portugal Under-21s international made 10 appearances during his stay on the banks of the River Trent, with just three of those coming while O’Neill was in charge.

He last featured for Forest when he came off the bench in the 3-1 defeat at home to Aston Villa back in March.

In total, he started only one Championship game – on the opening day, at Bristol City.
