Diogo Dalot returns to Manchester United

Diogo Dalot has returned to Manchester United for pre-season training.

The 22-year-old was given extended time off following his late call-up to the Portugal squad for the European Championship and Dalot started in the round-of-16 defeat to Belgium.

Dalot spent last season on loan at AC Milan, who offered to re-sign the right-back on another season-long loan last month, but United want to keep Dalot until they make a definitive decision on their plans at full-back.

United are interested in signing Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier, left-back Alex Telles has been ruled out for three weeks with an ankle injury and Brandon Williams is expected to head out on a season-long loan.

Dalot still enjoys a warm rapport with United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who could keep the Portuguese if a move for Trippier fails to materialise.

After making his national team debut against France in the European Championship group stage, Dalot was honoured by the Portuguese president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, with the Medal of Honour of the municipality of Celorico de Basto.

Dalot said: "It is with enormous pride that I receive this honour, despite not being a native of Celorico de Basto, because I was born in Braga, I really have a strong link with the municipality through my father who was born here.

"Since I was a child I have built a bond with the town, which has a place in my heart, as do all of you who live here. I am sorry that I cannot be there with you, because I am in Manchester, but I am very proud to be represented by my parents and I hope that they can express this feeling of pride that we are feeling."

Dalot's father, Jacinto Teixeira, said his son has 'learned a lot' from playing for United and Milan since leaving Porto for Manchester in 2018.
