Diogo Dalot pays tribute to Michael Carrick after shock Manchester United exit

Diogo Dalot has told Michael Carrick to enjoy some time with his family after paying tribute to the departing Manchester United coach.

Carrick's 15-year spell at Old Trafford came to an end tonight with his decision to leave his role as a first-team coach after his final game as caretaker manager.

The 40-year-old took over after the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer early last week and guided United to wins against Villarreal and Arsenal, as well as an impressive draw at Chelsea, but rather than returning to the coaching ranks under new manager Ralf Rangnick, he has decided to leave the club.

Dalot has worked under Carrick ever since he was signed in the summer of 2018 and he paid tribute to his contribution to the club as a player and now a manager.

“He leaves us today but I want to thank him for everything he’s done for this club as a player and a manager now," Dalot told MUTV.

"Good luck to him and I think he’s going to enjoy some time with the family now."

Carrick's spell as caretaker ended on a high as United beat Arsenal 3-2 at Old Trafford. They went behind to a bizarre goal from Emile Smith-Rowe and were then pegged back by Martin Odegaard after turning the game around.

But Cristiano Ronaldo slammed home a penalty - his second goal of the game - to earn a vital three points and Dalot is running out of superlatives for his countryman.

“I don’t think you can describe more than what he’s doing. He’s a fantastic man, a fantastic professional and a fantastic player. Together [as a squad] we make a good team," he said.
