Diogo Dalot leads messages to Manchester United star David de Gea following penalty save

A number of players from Manchester United's first-team squad have sent messages to goalkeeper David de Gea after his heroics helped the Reds secure a dramatic 2-1 win over West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.

Just minutes after it looked as though substitute Jesse Lingard had wrapped up all three points for United, West Ham were awarded a penalty in stoppage time when Andriy Yarmelenko's cross struck the outstretched arm of Luke Shaw.

After a VAR check and on-field review by referee Martin Atkinson, the Hammers sent on Mark Noble from the bench to take the spot-kick, but he saw his poor effort kept out by De Gea, meaning he proved to be United's hero on a dramatic afternoon in the capital.

Although it was a relatively easy effort to keep out, the Spaniard still had to be alive to dive the right way and thwart Noble, who is so often reliable from the spot.

Following such a heroic contribution, De Gea, after the game, took to social media to issue a message and upload a photograph of him denying Noble from 12 yards.

The goalkeeper said: "These are the games. We win as a team. #team #mufc."

The Spaniard's post attracted a wave of responses from his team-mates, who both thanked and congratulated him for his role in helping United secure a third consecutive win in the league.

Right-back Diogo Dalot, who was an unused substitute against the Hammers, delivered the pick of the responses, writing: "Number 1," signifying his importance to the team.

De Gea's post also attracted responses from both Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, who each sent emoji messages to the 'keeper. Varane sent two flames and Ronaldo a muscle, highlighting De Gea's strength to stand up in such a big moment.

Fred also replied, writing: "Crack," with both the flame emoji and a clap.

Fellow midfielder Scott McTominay sent his team-mate three love hearts.

With all of that in mind, De Gea's contribution against the Hammers was a telling one, and one that was most certainly appreciated and loved by his team-mates.

Had he not made that save, United would now be sitting fifth in the table, two points behind early pace-setters Chelsea and Liverpool.
