Diner slams KFC over 'higher' lockdown prices - but here is what the fast food giant said

A fuming diner has slammed KFC for 'hiking prices' on takeouts during the coronavirus crisis - but the fried chicken giant says they've always charged for deliveries.

The fast food restaurant re-opened selected branches across the UK on Monday, May 4 - including the one in Filton, which had massive queues the day it reopened.

Now, a family wanting to avoid the lengthy queues at its stores has hit out at what they thought were 'increased prices' advertised on Deliveroo and JustEat, as BirminghamLive reports.

He planned to dine in on a 12 piece boneless dipping feast with his kids for VE Day on Bank Holiday Friday, May 8.

But soon realised the price on the selected item was an extra £5 more - from £18.99 to £23.99. The same price hike applies to deliveries in Bristol.

He told BirminghamLive: "My children really fancied a KFC later and I thought I would have a delivery in. I checked the KFC app and it said deliver with the subject companies above.

"I went on and had a look to find that the normal KFC prices had been inflated by around 25-30 per cent.

"For example, a 12 piece dipping boneless feast is normally £18.99, JustEat & Deliveroo it’s £23.99 - This goes throughout the menu.

"I gave my local KFC Kings Norton a ring and they confirmed that the prices I normally paid are what I thought.

"Like me, many people want a change from the day to day cooking so with KFC just reopening, thought it be a good idea with it being VE Day."

But KFC has hit back at the claims they inflated their prices, saying the prices are always set slightly higher for delivery than a drive-thru or restaurant meal.

They said the extra £5 was simply the delivery cost added to pay JustEat and Deliveroo, regardless of whether in the pandemic or not.

A spokesperson for KFC said: “We haven’t increased our prices for delivery during the pandemic.

"It’s just that, as with any restaurant offering a delivery service, it’s an added convenience so the prices are always set slightly higher than they are in restaurant or drive thru – which helps cover the cost of getting the food to your front door.”
