Dinamo Zagreb vs West Ham prediction: Said Benrahma can give Irons the perfect start

West Ham United return to European football as they travel to Croatia to face Dinamo Zagreb in the opening Europa League group stage clash.

The Irons are the slight favourites at 23/20 while hosts Zagreb are 9/4 and a draw is 5/2 with Grosvenor Sport.

The Inside Track's Tom Phillips is backing West Ham to bag three points in Croatia in a goalscoring thriller.

David Moyes' side make up Group H along with Genk and Rapid Wien in what is the club's first-time in the group stages of the competition since it has reformed from the UEFA Cup.

The last two campaigns in the Europa League ended in the qualifiers both at the hands of Romanian side Astra Giurgiu.

But this is a West Ham who are a lot tougher mentally thanks to Moyes' hard work over the last year or so.

Though their challenge will come in squad depth as the season progresses - they hardly invested in the squad in the summer and failed on a number of targets including Jesse Lingard.

Team stats

Zagreb are unbeaten in their last 13 UEFA Europa League group stage matches (won nine and drawn four), winning their last four in a row and only conceding once in eight games.

West Ham manager David Moyes has not managed in European competition since 2013/14 as Manchester United manager, leading them to the quarter-finals of the Champions League before losing to Bayern Munich.

H2H

West Ham have never played against Dinamo Zagreb.

The last time the Irons played against Croatian opposition was back in 1999 in the UEFA Cup against NK Osijek with the east London club winning 6-1 on aggregate.

Dinamo Zagreb have only picked up two wins in 15 matches against English opposition, including a 3-0 win at home to Tottenham last season in the Europa League round of 16 thanks to Mislav Orsic bagging a hat-trick.

Form

Hosts Dinamo Zagreb sit top of the table and level on points with Hajduk Split and Rijeka - all off them on 16 points.

Zagreb have won their last four matches on the bounce and are unbeaten in five finding the net 13 times and conceding five - they currently have the best defensive early on in the season by two goals too.

Meanwhile, West Ham are off to an unbeaten start in the Premier League with two wins and two draws. Fixtures involving the Irons have seen a total of 15 goals - tied with Leeds United and only Newcastle United beat them (mind you, that is because they have conceded 12 and scored only 5).
