Dina Asher-Smith wins again but Katarina Johnson-Thompson faces fitness race against time

Dina Asher-Smith won her second race in 48 hours - then revealed how she had stayed on track for the Olympics through lockdown.

Britain’s golden girl followed her 60 metres triumph in Karlsruhe by winning in Dusseldorf.

She was unable to match Friday night’s world lead of 7.08secs, stopping the clock this time in 7.12.

But on the day it emerged that fellow world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson has been sidelined until March with an Achilles injury, Asher-Smith declared herself happy with back-to-back “solid” performances after 15 months out of competition.

“I knew I was in good shape but sometimes it takes me a few meets to get going,” she added. “Hopefully with a bit more training and hard work we can push to faster times.”

Asher-Smith, 25, raced only against local opposition on her home track as the sport all but shutdown in 2020.

She said: “My coach and I broke down small targets as we were going throughout the lockdown.

“We did training blocks, then focused on the indoors, stuff like that. Motivation-wise, it has been okay - and with the Olympic Games this year you are always motivated.”

Next stop for Asher-Smith in her build-up to next month’s European Indoor Championships is a race next week in France.

“It will be great to get out there in a championship again,” she said. “I love championships. It is the most fun for me.”

Johnson-Thompson faces a race against time to be fit and firing on all cylinders at the Olympics.

Britain’s world champion heptathlete picked up a serious Achilles injury in training at the end of 2020 and is grounded until March - five months from the start of the Tokyo Games.

The Liverpudlian star has spent the last "few weeks" in a protective boot which finally comes off today "after a month of positive progress".

In an Instagram post she wrote: "My rehab is going as well as could be expected and whilst I am currently at home in Liverpool focusing on my recovery I will be heading back to Montpellier to begin training again in March.

“Understandably this is not the start to the year I was hoping for but I’m pleased to be able to share this off the back of a positive few weeks.

"I have a great team around me and I would like to thank them, along with all of my partners, for their unwavering support through what has been a difficult year for everyone."

She added: "This news doesn’t impact my plans for 2021, Tokyo is still very much the focus and I look forward to representing Great Britain in my 3rd Olympic Games."
