Dimitar Berbatov urges Mason Greenwood to "stay in the right lane" after England antics

Dimitar Berbatov has urged Mason Greenwood to "stay in the right lane" after his England antics saw him sent home from international duty in disgrace.

Manchester United striker Greenwood, 18, and Man City's Phil Foden, 20, broke strict quarantine protocols by inviting two women back to their hotel room in Reykjavik.

They were each fined £1,360 by Icelandic police and now face disciplinary action from their clubs.

Former United striker Berbatov has been delighted with Greenwood's progress at Old Trafford but worries the incident could impact his development.

"I hope his England antics don't hamper his chances [of Man United selection]. We have all been young players and done stupid things," the Betfair Ambassador told Mirror Sport.

"He will get some sort of a punishment, he can apologise and learn from those mistakes and hopefully they'll never be repeated again.

"Given the right environment, that is United, the players and manager around him, he is in the right place to become a great player - but only if he remains focused and chases that goal. He needs to stay in the right lane.

"Yes, you are going to have difficulty going forward with your career, you'll have ups and downs, but stay focused. If he can do that he will be OK."

Greenwood scored 17 in 49 appearances for United last season and was rewarded with an England call-up.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a close bond with the striker, who he first met aged seven, and has been working closely with him to improve his game.

He believes the teenager is more of a natural finisher than both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, and Berbatov is confident Solskjaer is the right man to keep Greenwood on the straight and narrow, if the youngster is willing to listen.

"I think they will have a good conversation," added Berbatov.

"The good thing is that Ole was a striker and Greenwood is a striker, so Ole is going to give him the right advice at this moment, I am sure.

"Of course it comes down to the environment the player has outside of the club, his family, friends, agent, but the most important thing is what Ole will tell him.

"Hopefully he can learn from this mistake so that it does not happen again. If it does, then he only has himself to blame."
