Dimitar Berbatov spoke to Man Utd scout on phone to discuss making "unbelievable" signing

Dimitar Berbatov has recalled encouraging Manchester United to sign "unbelievable" Anthony Martial when he played alongside the Frenchman at Monaco.

Former Red Devils striker Berbatov spent the 2014/15 season in Ligue 1 with Monaco, where an upcoming Martial was emerging as a serious talent.

Manchester United were keen on signing the France international, prompting the club's head coach to phone Berbatov to ask for his opinion on his young team-mate.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the Bulgarian said: "The United head scout called me, he was like: 'Berbs, we are looking at this kid Martial and wanted to ask what you think.'

"I told him this boy is unbelievable, the things he can do. He can be a great player, he just needs someone to guide him on the pitch.

"Of course, I'm still waiting for my commission!"

Louis van Gaal's Man United splashed out £36million rising to £58m to sign Martial in 2015, making him the most expensive teenager in the world at the time.

The Frenchman has had many positive moments in a Red Devils shirt, including scoring a sensational solo effort on his debut in a 3-1 win over bitter rivals Liverpool, but has also received criticism for being inconsistent.

Berbatov added: "I don't think people appreciate [Martial] as much as they need to. I hope he can continue in the right direction."
